Milking The Rhino
film i just saw on Netflix about the impact and issues wildlife conservation have on local communities in Kenya and Namibia. it also goes into the ways in which tourism can be beneficial or detrimental to their ways of life. every single time space had been made for a wildlife conservatory, there have been people living on those lands and they have almost always been pushed out and banned from killing game in those areas.
any book or film i view right now about how urbanized or modernized African countries are becoming basically breaks my heart. not to mention these white people, sipping mojitos pool-side in a Massai wildlife reservation tourist hotel just makes me horribly nauseous. and then they go to view the Himba, take their photos and gawk at them like they’re in the local zoo. it’s absolutely disgusting and i hate that urbanization is encroaching on their way of life to the point at which they have to do things like this is order to make money and stay afloat as a community.
