I am not an african american, I have never been to africa.

eh i agree. im not as angry but i prefer the term black

OMG!! hahahaa he is pissed!! hahahaa

he kinda looks like my dad too….

jesus christ. is this “self-hating black folks” day? i just got through dealing with some self-hating black folks on facebook, but tumblr too?…

for one, he’s wrong. and he’s dealing with some anti-African sentiments, and considering he’s Black, it’s self-hatred. Black, African-American, Negro, and any other terms we have chosen (which needs to be noted that “African-American” is probably the first term we chose for ourselves) are not offensive. the Americas, the US especially, is a land that is obsessed on every level about race and racial categories. thus, the need for such labels. if you don’t like it, then choose something else, but to be offended by them is foolishness.

second, and again, he’s wrong. you don’t have to have been to Africa in order or use the term. but it isn’t about his being from Africa, or having parents from Africa, it’s about him wanting to distance himself from the continent. he would more and likely also say that he’s never lived in a hut, never been chased by a cheetah, and never went hungry, thus he is as American as Rick Santorum’s lily-white ass.

he isn’t angry because people term him something he’s not. he’s too old not to know the reason why we put “Africa” before the hyphenation. he’s angry because someone associated him with the dreaded dark continent of Africa.

he’s probably driving to the KKK/Tea Party rally to see if they accept Uncle Toms such as himself.
